Behind the name: Melton in the Great War 1914-1919
Melton Heritage Group was a partnership made up of representatives from Melton Parish Council, Melton Primary School, Melton Old Church, St Andrew’s Church, Melton Women's Institute (WI) and volunteers. They were responsible for Behind the name: Melton in the Great War 1914-1919, a very special Heritage Lottery funded project.
Over five years the group held community activities and researched the names on the WWI Melton War Memorial and the Roll of Honour; including women’s roles during the war, a time of great political change for both men and women. The research includes stories recorded since 2009 with wider information from newspaper cuttings, documents and personal letters from descendants still living in the area. A limited edition of 300 was self published in 2019.
The book has become an historical document about Melton’s past and a heritage record for the future, ‘remembering’ in an easily accessible format, with copies held in the British Library, National Library of Scotland, National Library of Wales, Bodleian Libraries at the University of Oxford, Cambridge University Library and Trinity College Library in Dublin. As well as locally in the Suffolk Record Office, Woodbridge Museum and Woodbridge Library.
Apart from helping generally and running print workshops at Melton Primary School, my role was to draw the fifteen Oak Gall ink illustrations in the book, showing what Melton looks like ‘today’ (in 2019).
Drawing buildings took me completely out of my comfort zone, but in the end was hugely rewarding and very special to see my work in such a beautiful book.
